Strange - Beautiful

Because some email friends have commented on some of my photos, I decided to create this page.  They have told me that they have never seen some of the things included in my website.  That got me to thinking of things that might be fairly common in my part of the world but which others have not seen often.

Joshua Tree in Mojave Mohave Desert, California

Located near Baker, California is this road.  Since I was a boy riding to my aunt and uncle's house in Las Vegas, this sign has fascinated me.  I don't know what the word "zzyzx" means, but I bet there aren't many names that would be listed later than this one in an alphabetical list.  This area is a rock hounders dream, but I don't recall (from my childhood study) what kinds of rocks or gems are in this area.

Joshua Tree is a desert plant.  It is fairly common in the Mojave Desert of south west USA.  There is even a National Monument (Park) set aside to protect the species or to highlight its uniqueness..

windmills near Tehachapi, California

No, this is not a rich man's idea of air conditioning.  In the hills outside of Tehachapi, California, there are hundreds of these windmills.  There are similar devices set up in the hills east of San Francisco.  I hear these machines create megawatts of power.

solar panels in Mohave Mojave Desert California

Another method used in the Mojave Desert to provide electric power is solar panels.  Because land is wide open (and cheap) out in the desert, it is more cost effective to build the power center there.  This particular place covers about one square mile.

world's largest thermometer, in Mohave Mojave Desert, Baker, California

If you have a digital photo of something that might be unique to your area, I would enjoy including it on my website for others to enjoy.  Please email me about it.  Thanks!

The World's Largest Thermometer can be found in Baker, California.  You can judge its size compared with the cars at its base.
