Events from 2006

We stayed two nights near Salzburg so that we could have an entire day to enjoy the city of The Sound Of Music.  Our first stop on this day was the Untersberg, a very high mountain not far from the city.  We rode the cable car to the top, walked around a bit and enjoyed the view before clouds rolled in to obscure it.  You can see the Salzburg fort (Fortress Hohensalzburg) at the top right corner of this photo.

We spent more than three hours exploring the Fortress Hohensalzburg.  It is fascinating.  The funicular (on the right side of this photo) takes us from the town to the fortress.  Since we purchased the Salzburg Card, we got free access to everything, including the Untersberg, all the busses, the funicular, and the elevator back to town.

And this is the view from that museum, looking back across town to the fortress.

The next morning before leaving Salzburg for our next stop, we took a quick tour of Hellbrunn Palace.  As we were arriving, the construction crew was removing the broken windows from the Palace (the truck in the photo).  This is a nice little palace, and the gazebo from the movie "Sound Of Music" is in the yard of this Palace.

We rode the bus into the city so that we could walk from one end to the other.  We saw many things, including Mozart's birth home, his statue, nearly all of Old Town, and of course, the famous Fortress.  In looking through our photos, I see about a dozen scenes that are also in the movie "The Sound Of Music".  We weren't trying to photograph just from the movie, but we ended up seeing them anyway.

The view from the fortress itself is nice.  We could see all of Old Town nestled between the mountain and the river.  At the left side of this photo, you can see a white building up on the hill.  This is an art museum.  After we finished exploring the fortress, we walked along this mountain from the fortress to that museum simply to ride the elevator back down into town.  This is an easy and very enjoyable walk that provides various views of town.

As we were finishing our tour of Salzburg, a freak storm came up.  At first it rained a bit, then it rained hard, then it rained VERY hard, and finally, it started hailing horribly.  We took shelter inside a restaurant and enjoyed an afternoon snack as the worst of the storm passed.  On our drive back to our room, we could see some of the damage the storm had caused.  Trees were knocked down, electrical lines had fallen, and as we discovered the next day, even windows in some buildings were broken.
