We drove through the beautiful countryside of Luxembourg. We accidentally programmed
the gps to take the shortest route, and so it routed us through small towns and along back roads. It was nice.
We stopped for a couple hours in the city of
Luxembourg, so that we could take the tour through the Casemates, known as the Gibraltar of the North, in which tunnels were dug for protection of the city.
The Casemates were our goal, but we also got to enjoy some nice views on our walk to it. Luxembourg is a pretty city.
The diagram above shows the original layout of the tunnels. There were two parts, one on each side of the valley, connected by a tunnel suspended above the river. There are hundreds of steps going down and back up again through solid rock.
One of Johnny's friends has a collection of rocks from all over the world. So, at most of the places we visited, Johnny would pick up a rock for her. She was thrilled to receive so many rocks to add to her collection.
