Ketchikan, Alaska

View of uptown Ketchikan from the new 3rd Avenue Bypass.  The airport is in background on the next island.

Downtown (Old Town) Ketchikan.  This city has variously sold itself as "Alaska's First City" (since it is the first stop on the ferry routes) and the "Salmon Capital of the World" (since it exports more salmon than anywhere).

This was a nice walk in overcast and sometimes rainy weather.

Downtown has several interesting places and stops.  They have a Discovery Center, which shows various habitats for animals and plants, some native artifacts and history, as well as history of the settling of the area by the white man.  To the left is a replica of a totem pole, the first totem pole I'd ever seen.  To the right is Creek Street, which actually follows and oversits the creek, as you can see.  I found these buildings to be much more colorful than most of Ketchikan.

Below is the ferry which serves the airport.  This ferry or a private boat is the only way to get to and from the airport.  The ferry costs five dollars for round trip (provided you travel both directions the same day).
