This was the 51st annual Coarsegold Rodeo. Though our town is small, this is one of the regular circuit of rodeos for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, and we get some big names participating here. This year my friend Sergio attended with me. This was his first rodeo, and he said that he would enjoy coming back next year.
Before we watched the professional rodeo events, we helped my friend Joann Swallow run the food booth to benefit the Coarsegold Community Center. Since the morning's events were canceled due to the very wet arena, we didn't have many customers until the professional events were about to begin.
The very first event had a very strange twist. This bronc rider was dismounted, as most are, but his hand wouldn't come loose from the cinch. He was literally dragged around the arena before the
PickUp Men could stop the bronc and cut him loose. The cowboy was fine, and the rest of the Coarsegold Rodeo went better, with no further unexpected incidents.
Since we had so much rain during the week prior to the Coarsegold Rodeo and also during the first two days of the rodeo, the arena was very wet and muddy. This badly affected the scores of the participants. I think I have never seen such low scores and long times. Still it was an enjoyable rodeo.
My favorite event is still the calf roping. It amazes me how a cowboy and his horse can work together with such perfect timing.
