I had been told that the "best doctor in the world" for what I needed was Dr. Hansen in Seattle, Washington.  He is indeed a great doctor.  The surgery took 3 1/2 hours, during which he did major reconstructive work on my right foot.

When I woke in my room after the operation, I felt no pain whatever.  It was so nice.  They had applied a nerve block that lasted until after breakfast the next day.

When the nerve block wore off, I was given a self administering morphine drip.  It worked fairly well, until the medicine ran out.  However, the morphine didn't agree with me, and I couldn't keep down anything I ate.  So they switched me to a different medicine, which worked nicely.

I was discharged from the hospital after three days, even though nausea caused by the pain pills kept me from being able to stay upright for more than a couple of minutes.
