The Great Western Divide is the dividing line between the west side and the east side of the Sierra Nevada.  Rainfall that falls to the west drains into the Central Valley and eventually flows into San Francisco Bay.  Rainfall on the east side drains into the Owens Valley and eventually empties into the Pacific Ocean in southern California.
