There is no greater feeling of complete freedom then when living within one of natures many beautiful remote gardens. Whether it is a mountain garden, or a foot hill's garden, or a prairie's, desert's or seashore's. There is a feeling when living there amid it all of belonging to the Earth. It becomes a very personal relationship. It is being a part of it as it lives and breathes just as we do. We become one with nature. Dave Clingman who I have come to know as a treasured friend, has found such an Eden there on the property where he lives in Coarsegold. There is a million dollar view from each of his windows. He respects the land and tends to it carefully in thought and action. My life is fuller today just by knowing Dave, and sharing his love for the beautiful area that he is so blessed to live in.

My wife found your site because I grew up in Raymond and enjoyed many parades even the first one. Also I noticed you know the Swallows I went to school with the oldest I think his name is Jay and is a really good guy. I last saw him at the rodeo about six or seven years ago and I think he was working on the railroad. I like your site and I have to go now. Tell Jay Ron from Raymond said hello.

Dave, Good day! My name is Candi. I was searching the web for information on how to fix a problem I'm having with my home & came across your website. Actually, I've been informed by the water company that I have a MAJOR leak "somewhere from your house to the road" (a mere 1 acre mind you:-)) & I can't afford a plumber so I thought I'd find some info on the net & pleasantly for me, I found this site...because you have listed your problems with water leaks...hence, here we are.
I have to tell you, I wish there were more to see on your site. I know it is difficult to maintain & add, etc. but your site is so interesting & wonderful. I loved being taken away from reality even if for a few moments. Keep it up please.
I would like to know how you came to live in the bus please. I feel that we are kindred in some ways...I was especially thrown back & in awe that someone in the world besides me finds trees amazing & interesting. The fact that you took the time & the photos & posted them of the strange/different tree shapes in Ansel Adams Wilderness was incredible to me. I am forever pointing out to my family, friends & strangers, this tree or that one. When I see one oddly shaped I tell them, "see, even nature has it's "weirdoes", as I'm so lovingly referred to.
Peace
Candi

Wow, Dave, what a life you're having!
We just moved here three weeks ago. The 'we' is my wife and I and our 4
children, ages 2-13. A friend has been inviting us up here for 10 years and we never took him up on it. Our first morning waking up in his house in YLP last May brought this amazing feeling. I felt exactly the way I did when I was 8 waking up on the first day of Summer and realizing I could go where ever I wanted.
I've never been terribly curious about my surroundings (L.A. & Orange County for the last 20 years) but living here makes me want to know the names of things, trees and constellations and mountains and such. I've been roaming the web and four your site. Do you know any books or web sites or clubs that could help me learn more about this wonderful place? I keep thinking some nameless 'authorities' are going to show up on my doorstep and try to take me back to Huntington Beach. Silly I know, but it's hard to believe we really get to live here.
Thanks for putting together a beautiful web site, you're quite good with that camera!

Just wanted to read up on the other person that had a cache in Northfork. We (my wife, Kathy and I ) think North Fork is a great little place.
We're coming over this weekend to winterize our cache. We were going to stop in Coarsegold and pic up a couple of caches but do to time constraints, (Kathy wants to hit the Chocolate Festival in Oakhurst ) we won't be able to. We'll be back to check on the cache in the future and will make our way over there.
Just wanted to say, Hi!

Hello-
Loved your photos of Norris/Jackass lakes.  My 11 year old son Gabe and my friend Lori and her 2 kids will be going in there on 8/8/04.  Is there a good place to camp overnite near the trailhead?  What elevation is the trailhead and how long a hike to lower Jackass Lake?   How far a drive is the trailhead from Bass Lake?  How hard a cross country hike is it to Lady Lake from Lower jackass Lake?  We can't wait to see Mt. Ritter and the Minarets.  My friend Jessica has a house in Mariposa - we love to come up in the winter too.  Thanks for any and all assistance.

Hi Dave,
Really enjoyed your web site!  It was a lot of fun seeing all your pictures, and I love your friend Tawny.  My husband & I are thinking of semi-retiring and moving to Coarsegold.  Seems like a really nice place to live from what I've been able to research so far.  (We took a trip to Yosemite a couple months ago and did our grocery shopping in Coarsegold.)  Since then, I've been to every web site I can to get info on the area.  We are Southern California natives, and it is just getting so busy here.  I'm tired of the traffic and keeping up with the Jonses.  (ha ha)  Would love to have a much quieter lifestyle like you have, although a couple of acres is plenty for us!  We live in Valley Center in San Diego County, and it is, or was the rural area ( I guess it is still considered rural, but not for too much longer as developers are buying everything up and building)  There just isn't anything in southern Calif that is still quiet enough.  Anyway, thank you for sharing your life in coarsegold with everyone.  Maybe we will meet someday, will let you know if we decide to buy a home there.  Take care and enjoy each day!

Hi, I checked your web page and I have a question I would like for you to answer, please. What type of posts do you use for the corral? Is the wood treated? I have been told to use untreated wood, but wouldn't that rot? I live in Florida and we get a lot of rain. If the horse nibbles at the untreated wood, would he get sick? Please reply as soon as possible, I need to build the corral next week. My horse arrives in 10 days. Thanks  Ani

Dave~~~ As a lover of rural living and a man who is at his best out among the tress and hills and land, I am totally in love with where you are living. I found it SO refreshing to see all the many shapes of trees and the vast sky with billowy clouds above, and the furry high hills strong and sturdy and you smiling there like the big yellow Sun.
I live in a mobile unit (trailer) much like your living space. I never thought I would be living in a trailer this long either. But your bus has much more of a flair of uniqueness than my long trailer lol. My place is out along the river outside of Stockton California. It is rural here with Mt. Diablo looming on the horizon to the West. Actually I have lived in the old country areas of Wisconsin which look very much like where you live. I was never happier living there under the stars at night and not having any neighbors for as far as I could see. A person really does become part of the land and nature when living with it all so closely. Although where I live now has it's beauty it's hardly comparable to the green rolling coulees of Wisconsin that nestle beside the beautiful Mississippi River.
It is ALWAYS a real treat to just happen upon a site like yours and see someone like yourself who is filled with such a zest for life. The animals that surround you there also are delightful and are such an added attraction to a natural cozy setting like you have . It is clear that a great quality of life has been found for you at the ranch. All of your pictures are gorgeous and crisp and clear. I am totally envious of your living situation. It's one that I had in a similar way at one time. Just waking up to the those fabulous sounds of nature every morning truly makes you feel so glad to be alive. And feel so privileged to be where you are. I could live like that where you are forever and ever.
It is my pleasure to have visited your Eden and I will come back again and again to see what's new and to just revisit.  Thanks for having a site like you have. As I have said, it is a refreshing situation for me. Take care  of yourself and those cute critters too. Bye~~

I am a 44 year old woman and I have had the idea to buy myself a bus and live in it. My friends think I have lost my mind, but I will be graduating from college soon and I have worked full time through all the years I have been going after my degree.  I have found that in this world your strengths lie in the things you can do without and I have indeed done without many things through the years.  I am so tickled to find your website.  I have this vision of myself living in my bus on the Texas coast, teaching during the school year and long boarding and fishing all summer long.  My daughters are grown and have left home long ago so I don't have a lot to lose.  I am not much in the line of carpentry, but heavens It seems I could possibly rought it out myself and remodel as my pay permits.  It sure beats rent and I don't ever want to be tied to a piece of property again.  I think you are terrific for living the way you want to.  Life is far too short to spend it making money for a house that you spend so much stress trying to pay for, and never really getting to live.  All my best to you. What an incredibly unique man you are.  What an exciting adventure your life has been.  This is what I want in my life, adventure, friends, memories, love, not things.  I am so inspired.

Your website is so appealing because I can live vicariously through it.  I grew up around family members' farms and working ranches in Southeast Texas.  The saying 'you can take the boy out of the country but you can't take the country out of the boy' is very true.  That may be misleading because although I was present, I did not actually take part in harvesting crops, spraying cattle, etc.  I have lived in large cities my entire adult life but a part of me really longs to live as you do, even part-time.
You seem to have a really nice existence and your friends seem like real people.  I just looked at your website again and I would have to say the pictures with the brief but succinct narratives MAKE your website.  My favorite part?  The ride with your friend Teri.  Looks FUN.

Hello Dave,

I left Southern CA to opt for N. I love your site and how you represent yourself and honor your friends and surroundings.  Your Soul really comes through.......that's the reality.  How great to share your life and what's important to you.   It was my pleasure!  Thanks, Roger

Dave, My compliments on your site.  I lived in Fresno for about 8 months last year looking for a job after being laid off from a dot.com in San Francisco.  Familiar story I guess.  Not much luck, so I moved back up to Sacramento in May, this is my home town, and my family's here.  But I wish I had come across your site while I was in Fresno, I had plenty of time to visit the high country that I was so close to.  I visited the giant Sequoiadendrons many times in snow and sun.  That's my idea of a spiritual retreat.  I found the Sierra Endangered Cat Haven on one visit.  Also followed 168 to Huntington Lake and had lunch at the Lakeside hotel built in 1921.  I'm amazed at the huge expanse of high sierra country between Fresno and the Owens Valley with hardly a road or trail to cross it.  Do you know of anyone who does high country horse backpacking?

Sorry I couldn't help out with the tack and all...I know what'cha mean by a free horse being far from free...but it's been many years since I had to give mine up.
Needless to say, I was intrigued to learn you live in a bus. Oddly, I had just read "Into the Wild," a book about Christopher McCandless, who had the guts to realize a dream of living in the Alaskan wilderness, ironically ending up in an abandoned bus near Denali Nat'l Park, where he perished in 1992. Anyway...it's been a long-time interest (and struggle) of mine to down-size into a 30-foot Airstream. Perhaps out of protest to all the "McMansions" that continue to litter and cover our beautiful state like a cancer.  A more rural existence beckons, and am considering moving up to the Gold Country.
Hope you and the critters are doing well! Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I ran across your website when I was search for Coarsegold. My son who is leaving the Marines ( 12 years ) is moving to Coarsegold. He and his wife have 5 children ( 4 girls ). I plan to visit them Dec 31 - Jan 4 (Cheap air fares ). So I was searching for a place to stay , etc and came across your site. So it seems that we should be able to find plenty to do. Seem like you like it out there. Thx.

Good morning.  It's a rainy morning here in mid-Missouri, a much needed drink, so instead of being out in the garden I thought I'd spend sometime on line.  This is my first time visiting your site.  Very nice place to visit, and for you, a beautiful place to live.  I'm sure you revel in its glory.  Enjoy your day and I'll visit again.

I was absolutely enthralled with your pictures and stories; I felt like I spent the afternoon with you and was catching up on old times.  Even the country that you live in reminds me of the area that I have spent my early years, doing the same activities - riding, hiking and a few friends.  Some of my youth was spent in Tehachapi, the surrounding mountains, the Mojave dessert, Sequoia and Mt Whitney - climbed that twice, once from each approach.
Are you living off the grid there or do you have commercial power?  I lived off the grid and had built my own power system - that was wonderful, thought I would be there forever.  I had 25 acres on the Canadian border in the foothills of Mount Baker, NW Washington.  Alas, someday I will do it again. For now, it's the city life.

I was just checking out your website...pretty cool stuff.  How did you come to live in a bus?  What is life in a bus like?  I live in San Jose and am actually moving to San Francisco.  Somehow, this is getting me closer to my dream of owning a ranch...at least that's what I keep telling myself.  Anyway, just wanted to let you know that your website is appreciated.

Hi Dave: I came across your pages about 4 years ago, when I had a WEBTV and you had your phone card business then! Now, here I find you again and it is so great to learn what all has happened to you over these years; all good other than the terrible foot surgery you had to endure! Hope everything is coming along good for you and each day brings you better walking, etc.,! So nice to meet some of your "family" too, which you didn't have way back when! Oh yes, I'm that old fart in Florida, who lives on an island and is water logged from either swimming or roller blading or driving a jet ski like a bat out of Hell and scaring everyone! Just wanted to say "HI"! Please keep your site up so i can check on you ever so often! Take care, Bob Stevens

Howdy Dave,
After following your various links here and there I thought I'd zap you a note.  I too am an outdoor nut and like you do not care for competitive sports.  My favorite activity is backpacking.  My love of the mountains of Oregon has led me to work with the US Forest Service for a total of about twelve seasons.
Be well,
Bruce

What a nice site! I live in Maryland, out in the country on a once thriving farm. I just have dogs now. Not allot of time to do farm work. Anyway I came across your site and was curious as to your living in a bus. How did that happen. I also enjoyed your pictures especially the one's of the neat trees and the sunsets. We don't see to many sunsets here in Maryland because of all of the trees. If you live on a hill maybe. I love the outdoors and was taken back by your photos.

Hi Dave, I was looking for information on Coarsegold and found your website.  I've enjoyed reading and looking at the pictures.  It looks beautiful there.  I especially enjoyed hearing about Tawny and KC.  I'm an animal lover myself. Me and my girlfriend Kaaren are planning a weekend at a local Bed and Breakfast house in Coarsegold in early April.  We are wondering if you can lend some advice about good hikes in the surrounding areas.  We're not very familiar with the area even though we only live in Clovis.

Hello Dave,
I'm impressed that you live in a bus.  I also have a homesteading mentality, acquired from twelve years of Alaska.  I still have a cabin there (no running water or electricity) and some property on a remote island (16 acres) where I spend summers.  This winter I've spent in graduate school at St. John's in Santa Fe.  Santa Fe is tolerable, but I'm missing my adopted Alaskan family.  In mid-May I'm going back to build a cabin on the island, and I'll be back in Santa Fe in mid-August.

Just a Texas Cowboy stopping by to say hi. I live in the Panhandle of Texas outside of Amarillo. IM sure you see the same stars I do at night esp. in the summer. People need to be more like you. I do not know you but seeing your sight and reading your interest tell a lot about your heart and soul. It is neat to know that there are still people out there in this world that sees simplicity not complication, honesty not doubt or fear, nature not hurt or sadness. some of these words do not belong together if you notice but do they really have to?
Have a good day friend.

I stopped by and checked out your web site the other day and emailed you but did not sign your guest book... <G> I live up in Humboldt county.  Born and raised there. I presently own four acres in the middle of the redwoods...with a stream going through it.  A bit different than living in the mountains.
Enjoyed your web site.... went through a lot of the same stuff.... like burying the wire under the garden.... afraid mine was'nt all that successful.  Ended up getting gohpher traps.

I've been a new york city-boy for a long time now, and for the last  couple of years I've been wrapping my mind around the idea of moving to  the country- I know- its an old story- but every time I'm out in nature  I calm right down and think-ok this is who I am.
For the past couple of years I've been complaining about how crazy  people are here, and then the World Trade Center went down. I  volunteered to do clean up/search and rescue, but we ended up standing  around because they were afraid another building was going to collapse.
In the following days, the people were at first very caring and much  more "real." An event like that puts things into perspective. But now  most of them are back to being nuts. And its driving me nuts.
So I've been thinking about moving back to California and getting back  to my hippie "roots."
I keep telling people here that I want to put a trailer on some land and  over the next however many years build a house. They're dumbfounded. So  it was great to find out how you're living in a bus and that you didn't  have to do it by having to be a landowner yourself.
